"Get Messages" fails without displaying the usual password query box
Starting very late on the 28th or on the 29th, Thunderbird cannot "Get Messages". I *can* SEND messages. Both of my email accounts are affected and since they are from different ISPs, I don't think the problem is with the ISP. I do not store my passwords, so in the past I would get prompted for the password, but this no longer occurs. I've tried turning the AV software off but that has no effect. The error console shows the following errors: Timestamp: 12/30/2016 04:23:19 PM Error: TypeError: tab is undefined Source File: chrome://messenger/content/tabmail.xml Line: 1072

I'd start by going to Tools|Options|Security|Passwords→Saved Passwords and removing all passwords relating to the affected account.
Given that you say you prefer to enter passwords, then there shouldn't be any of them stored here, so it would be useful to discover if in fact they have been stored.
I have already verified that were, in fact, no passwords stored.
are you using the enigmail add-on by any chance?
What add-ons do you have installed?
I don't know what enigmail is. My extensions are : CompactHeader Lightning My appearance is: default My plugins are: Shockwave Flash 24.0 r0 VLC Web Plugin all other plugins are disabled
I've tried snoozing my AV and Firewall then choosing Help.Restart with add-ons disabled. No change in symptoms.
If I clear the error console and then click on "Get Messages", this is the singular error that pops up.

Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
I've already tried that, with and without snoozing the AV first. No change.
