How do you keep history url autocomplete while not showing history in the drop-down menu?

I used to be able to type "go" in the location bar, and have it autocomplete it to "google.com" without seeing my history with the site in the drop-down menu. If, however, I had bookmarked a google.com search, it would show up. How do I achieve this with the current firefox?

The location bar drop-down list can show history items, bookmarked pages, pages opened in tabs, and search suggestions. You can set what suggestions show when you enter an URL in the location/address bar bar via Options/Preferences -> Privacy

  • Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest:
    History
    Bookmarks
    Open tabs

If you disable history then you should only see bookmarks. The opposite would be impossible because a bookmark that has been visited would become an history item and thus show.

Thanks for the quick answer, but I don't think you're understanding what I'm asking. I would like to keep the autocomplete url, while history on the location bar is turned off.

I still require help with solving this issue.

Hi nukii, Click the options in Firefox and then under the 'Search' settings you can find the heading 'default search settings'. 1. Check if the 'Provide Search Suggestions' is checked with a tick mark and also check whether if the next option, 'Show search suggestions in location bar results' is selected with a tick mark.

When both of these options are unchecked you may not be able to get the location bar search autocomplete. Also when you have selected Firefox to 'Never remember history' these options will be automatically unchecked to keep your privacy.

Thanks for the response, but this is still not what I'm talking about.

Sites I've visited are stored in history. They are then used to autocomplete the url when you start typing it in. I would like to keep this feature without the long list of my history with the site showing underneath.

You are welcome, Nukii. I am sorry, when Firefox is in 'Never remember history' setting, you cannot view the location bar search suggestion (Because it becomes unchecked automatically to preserve privacy of user). So the only option to keep the location bar autocomplete option without letting entire history to show underneath is to delete the history manually.

Maybe set browser.urlbar.maxRichResults to 0 (zero) on the about:config page.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

I don't have the "Never remember history" option on. It's set to "Remember history".

In earlier firefox versions i could have my settings like in the image.

And still be able to have firefox autocomplete my url from my history.

@cor-el The problem with it is that It does not show any of my bookmarks. If it did show bookmarks, that would be exactly what I wanted.
