This is regarding IMAP failing to authenticate when a user changes his/her password. In this case, we need restart the IMAP service on both the exchange server (DAG/cluster). This behavior is for Thunderbird.

Once the password is changes , Thunderbird won't allow us to send and receive emails it continuously prompts for new password. Is this behavior is by design ? why Thunderbird is not able understand that password has changed so in this case it should automatically store the new password and shall start working instead prompting user to enter password manually.

You changed your password in the webmail account. Did you then change the password stored in Thunderbird ?

  • 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > Security' > 'Passwords' tab
  • click on 'saved Passwords'
  • click on 'show Passwords'
  • right click on the relevant mail account line and select 'Edit Password'.
  • Remove the old password and type in the new.
  • When done click on 'close'
  • click on OK

It is a Microsoft Exchange Account - Configured in Thunderbird with IMAP.

do I need to follow the same instruction on every password change ? will it not accept it automatically.
