Why am I getting upgrade notifications when I have NO INTENTION of upgrading my OS (which would be required) at this time?
Why do you think it's good to force me to upgrade my operating system so that I can have the upgraded firefox? I will lose the use of programs that are important to me and CANNOT be replaced! There is NO free alternative to MPEG Streamclip. CopyPaste is no longer available. I use these, and other perfectly functional programs on my dinosaur Mac OX 10.8.5. The upgrades do not provide me with discernable added value. As you can see, this is a rant.

Chromium, and Opera dropped support of the old unsupported Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 along with WinXP and Vista back in April 2016.
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-osx
The most current version with security fixes that worked on Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 was actually 45.9.0 ESR (out on April 19, 2017) and not the older 48.0.2 Release (out on August 24, 2016).

Paypal for example will be looking for Firefox 49.0 at oldest at end of June. https://www.paypal.com/us/smarthelp/article/how-do-i-check-and-update-my-web-browser-faq3893
Besides not supporting newer cipher suites as time goes on you will be even more vulnerable over times due to not having security fixes (many of which were critical) since. https://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox/

Am a Windows person am trying here. Uninstall the Mozilla Maintenance Service and change the name of updater.exe to old-updater.exe.
Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.
^: that doesn't apply to Mac.
Note that at some point you may not be able to websites that require a secure connection that only supports newer cipher suites that your version doesn't support.\
You might be getting such an alert as part of a hotfix that automatically gets installed if you have disabled checking for updates in "Options/Preferences -> Advanced". You could check this on the about:addons page (Add-ons -> Extensions).

Doesn't matter.
O.K. Which risks? Really, chapter and verse.
You don't understand, or you don't WANT to understand. I'm not going to PAY for replacements to my vital programs just to upgrade in order to obtain safety from "security risks". Money, money, $$$. YOU eat it. Not Me. (am I angry? Yes.)
There are multiple known risks to running out of date software.
This is just the list of fixes in Firefox: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox/ This doesn't count all the fixes in Mac.
You are running Mac 10.8, you probably can update to a more recent version of Mac entirely for free. https://www.apple.com/macos/how-to-upgrade/ It's entirely free, and all your programs will stay on your laptop, so there is no reason not to.
