Stop opening new message window when clicking on notification

On Windows when notification comes about receiving new email, when I click it, current Thunderbird window shows on screen with message opened in the view panel.

Unfortunately, on Mac, when I do the same, new windows is opened for single message only.

Is it possible to configure Mac app to behave like Win app? No new window, bring up existing window, open new message in view panel.

Thank you.

On the Mac, what do you have in Preferences/Display/Advanced, 'Open messages in'? 'A new tab' makes messages open in the Message Pane when a notification is clicked, here on W10.

This is rather vague. I've had "new tab" settings. I would expect it appear in new tab, not new window and especially not in the same window in message pane.

I have changed that to "existing message window." This changes nothing. The behaviour is exactly the same - new window pops up with message only.

Does it happen in safe mode (hold Option when you launch TB)?

BTW I've just updated TB to 68.2.1 (64-bit) on MacOS Mojave 10.14.6

Still, new window pops up.
