That could be a IT restriction to block unwanted updates to the work computer. Did you check with IT about this? This is what it seems to be the case here where you are allowed to do certain actions with your work computer but anything beyond that isn't permitted. And since nothing changed when you tried sync - I suspect this is what is happening and you need to talk to your IT about this. Remember this is their computer and anything you do on it they have access to it - you have no privacy on their network.
