A bar entitled "search bookmarks and history" keeps opening without my asking.

Because of incompatability with other programs I use, I uninstalled 4.1 and reinstalled 3.6. Since then a bar opens in the middle of my screen entitled "Search bookmarks and history". How do I get rid of it?

That sounds like the location bar on the Navigation Toolbar.
