Some web links I click on mean that hundreds of blank tabs open up in Firefox - how can I stop this?

When I click on some internet links (ie an email address on a web page) Firefox opens up multiple blank tabs - so many that I have to close Firefox and start again.

I am working on a Macbook Pro - what's causing this please?

I have no idea what to do with those links.

That happens if you select Firefox as the application to handle a file if you get an open with dialog window to select an application. You should never select Firefox.

Thank Cor-el for that information. So how do I rectify this situation please?

You can see that in the link that the-edmeister posted.

Either change the file action in "Tools > Options > Applications" for that MIME type or file extension or if you do not find it there then you need to delete the file mimeTypes.rdf in the Firefox Profile Folder

Sorry - I'm not au fait with a lot of this techno speak and need step by step help!

So I go to Tools/Options/Applications - but where do I find 'Tools' to start with please?

Sorry, on Mac use Firefox > Preferences instead of Firefox/Tools > Options

Thanks. How do I change this 'mailto' application to redirect to my Hotmail, or is that not possible?

Nope, still can't get my head around what I am supposed to do here. The link about tells to open Applications/Mail but is that on my Mac or in Firefox? Confused.com or what. I think I'll just give this one up! Thanks anyway.
