I usually have a set number of 9 tiles on my New tab page with frequent websites (these are pinned and the pin icon is coloured). For some unknown reason the number of tiles have changed to six, when i try to pin a tile sometimes it gets deleted or the pin icon does not change colour to show i have pinned it. I dont remember having any tab related Add-ons. Also this happened after i had backed up my bookmarks. Please could you help me out ASAP.

I have tried reseting the prefernces in About:config I have tried to download an Add-on (does not really help)

I should note that the tiles work correctly but the PIn icon does not and also all 9 tiles do not appear when opened.

Currently there is an addon listed named "newtab-rowscols 1.0.1" There was an update to the tiles page in this new version, where no longer you can enter the number of tiles on this page. And it is still changing. Currently there is a hack to add the pinned tab in the about:config page in the config entry: browser.newtabpage.pinned.

The format is below: [{"url":"https://...","title":"<title>","frecency":224702,"lastVisitDate":1413224497987204,"type":"history"},{"url":"https://addons.mozilla.org/","title":null,"frecency":101546,"lastVisitDate":1412716615448665,"type":"history"}]

It does not look like you can add more at this time. You may be able to add more than 6 in that entry above for pinned tabs.

Firefox 33 modified the sizing of borders, margins, and other elements on the new tab page. As a result, users who have a higher default zoom level will have fewer tiles fitting on the page. You can zoom out (hold Ctrl and tap the - key) to see more. Some users are reporting that Firefox does not remember this modified zoom level on the new tab page the way it remembers it for other sites. In that case, you might need to use an add-on to modify the page.

Do i copy and paste the format into config entry: browser.newtabpage.pinned.

Hi yahmed, you should be able to pin sites on the tab.

If you can't, and you have already pinned sites onto your new tab page before, then there will already be a value for the browser.newtabpage.pinned preference. Don't just paste the sample data in, or you will lose what you have. Instead, I think the suggestion from guigs2 is to add new sites by following that format, which is, two outer square brackets containing a comma-separated list of sites:

[
  {
    "url":"http://example.com/1",
    "title":"Example 1"
  },
  {
    "url":"http://example.com/2",
    "title":"Example 2"
  }
]

Or without the extra spacing as it actually would appear:

[{"url":"http://example.com/1","title":"Example1"},{"url":"http://example.com/2","title":"Example2"}]

When you pin a site that is listed on the new tab page because you have visited it frequently, additional fields are added, including: "frecency", "lastVisitDate", and "type". However, these are not actually necessary so you don't need to improvise values for those.

Thanks for that but thats not exactly the problem. The tiles that are pinned but the indicator (the pin icon changing colour) does not activate. Also the the number of tile is 6 rather than 9. If I set the page size to zoom 90% all 9 tiles appear but it does not permanently stay like that.

But I very much appreciate the help, Thank you very much.

If your Firefox does not remember the changed zoom level on the "new tab" page, or if you prefer to resize the thumbnails without shrinking the search box, I think you will need an add-on, or to apply a custom style rule to your Firefox. This thread has more information about these workarounds: New tab has multiple thumbnails.

Regarding pinned sites, what I see is this:

  • Pinned tiles have a small pin icon at the left end of the caption below the thumbnail
  • When mousing over a tile, pins on the pinned tiles are blue, while pins on the other tiles are gray

Does yours follow that pattern?

The pinned tab does not have any color indicating whether or not the tile is pinned. Before this **** Mozilla update 33.0 the icon used to change to the color orange indicating the tile is pinned, otherwise it would stay grey.

Also my other device just applied this update and the same problems occurs. Also sometimes when you click the pin icon the entire tile disappears.

Couldn't Mozilla remove this unnecessarily retarded stupid useless update, its really ruining my experience and interactivity with the browser. I don't understand why there is any need for this useless rubbish update. Its causing a major inconvenience.

This is a support forum, so we're trying to get the page to work for you as designed or figure out why it isn't working for you as designed, and if you don't like how it works, we can suggest workarounds.

But we do not code Firefox or make user interface decisions. If you want to propose feature changes for future versions of Firefox, please use this site: https://input.mozilla.org/feedback

I am attaching a screen shot illustrating how pinned and not-pinned tiles look on my system, when you are not hovering a tile, and when you are. Is that different from what you are seeing?
