It doesn't matter what I try to do - even clicking in this box to add details to my question, caused Firefox to open a new window - not just a ta - that says "Firefox WebIDE" and has 'Project', 'Runtime' and 'View' plus an option to "Open App" and 'Select Runtime'. It's a nuisance and worries me! Where did it come from? How do I get rid of it?

You can find WebIDE under Firefox/Tools > Web Developer.

Do you mean that window?

You can try to toggle this pref to false on the about:config page to to see if that helps.

  • devtools.webide.enabled = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
