How do I get rid of the large message on my e-mail screen talking about Thunderbirdd's birthday?

The easy answer is to click on one of your messages and the message text will replace the Start Page in the Message Pane.

If you want it to never display go to the Menu Bar and select Tools-Options-General and uncheck the option to display the Start Page.

No menu bar showing? Press the alt key.
