I run Windows 7 as my production OS. I am testing Windows 10; Given it's many issues, I expect to test it for many months.

I see lots of posts about dual booting WIndows and Linux, but not multiple Windows editions.

My boot drive for windows 7 is a Samsung 960. It has a partition (F:\) where all the mail is stored (I use filters to move from the email account folders to My Mail folders). All Mail folders are on the F:\ drive. Only the profile folders are on the C:\ drive.

My Boot drive for Windows 10 is a Samsung 850 Pro; A separate SSD. The 960's C:\ drive is hidden (No drive letter), when booting from Windows 10... So there is no confusion or accidentally installing/running from the wrong drive. Like wise for Windows 7 - The Windows 10 boot drive is hidden.

So my question is; Is it safe to move the profile folder(s) from the Windows 7 Boot drive to A central location?

Does Thunderbird do anything differently on Windows 10 than it does on Windows 7? Or are the profiles identical?

I have another profile folder - C:\Users\Tanya\appdata\Local\Thunderbird. What's that?

EDIT: I am using Lightning, Manually Sort Folders, MinimizeToTray Revived and Adblock addons.

Be it Linux or another flavor of windows you must still do the same things.... and it is quite possible goping to be difficult because you do not keep your profile and mail together. a serious problem really as the paths to all your folders will need to be set up exactly the same in the various windows versions. that is F: will need to be the same on both versions

Have fun.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your reply.

All drives including F:\ are indeed the same on both systems. The only difference is the C:\ Drive. They are different physical drives.

All my mail is on F:\Users\Tanya\Mail. I was thinking of moving the profile folder to the same location. From both systems the paths are identical.

My concern was whether the profile "structure" and "contents" are identical on both versions of Windows. Ie. Would running TB on W10 change the profile such that W7 might think it's corrupt and vice versa.

thanks

I see only one issue.

F:\Users\Tanya\Mail is for mail.

SO place your profile like F:\Users\Tanya\MailProfile. Trying to merge the two locations could be disastrous

As for different things in different versions. Thunderbird has to be separate from the operating system foibles to allow it to run in Linux and OSX as well as windows. Sure a different compiled version is used in those cases, but otherwise the program is basically the same so I do not envisions any real problems..
