Can Thunderbird be made to run in just a few windows?

I've been investigating Thunderbird, and it seems to require a lot of windows to be open. If I have ten emails open, each one requires its own window, right? And let's say I'm composing five emails, each one requires its own window, right? I'm accustomed to Eudora, which can have 50 email and compose windows open in one window, using tabs. Firefox uses tabs very effectively, so why doesn't Thunderbird?

I just discovered that incoming emails can be opened in tabs (the tabs appear at the top, not the bottom like in Eudora). How about "write" windows -- can they be consolidated into one tab?

It's (still) not possible to open compose windows in tabs or to consolidate all the compose windows in one tab.

Thank you. Eudora was the classic email client. I don't know why everyone isn't emulating it. It managed to put everything into one window, using tabs. It's a wonderfully convenient program to use. I was thinking of using Thunderbird to get some extra features, but the interface is too clunky.
