Immediately after updating Firefox on my Android phone today, all my bookmarks disappeared on my phone! To clarify, these were not the same bookmarks as on my computer. I just started my Firefox account via phone a few minutes ago. I need to get my Android phone bookmarks back! Help!

Hi

No problem, I hope I can help

  1. Yes. It will take a few sync instances back and forwards, but you would be left with one set of bookmarks and folders saved on both devices being kept in sync with Firefox Sync.
  2. They would be combined together to form one set of bookmarks.
  3. The bookmark sets would be merged together.

I have been using Firefox Sync between my laptop and phone for several years and it does make life much easier.

Hi

Did you remove Firefox for Android before you updated?

Was your device previously using an up to date copy of Firefox for Android before this update came through?

more options

No, I didn't remove Firefox for Android before updating. Not sure if the previous Firefox for Android was up to date.

What can I do to retrieve the bookmarks?

more options

Hi

Unles you had them synced to another copy of Firefox, I do not think it is going to be possible to recover your bookmarks.

That's certainly bad news. Wish there could have been a warning indicated somewhere in the updating process. Synching of bookmarks may have been offered simply as an option at some point, but that was it. Not at all intuitive.

On my laptop Firefox, I can export, import and backup the bookmarks to my desktop as an html or Json file (?). I found no option to do either on Android.

Since the bookmarks collections saved to each device were different, it wasn't clear what would happen to each collection if I synched them, so I didn't.

But - didn't I read somewhere that Firefox backs up all your bookmarks?

more options

Hi

There is Firefox Sync, which is not a backup service but does allow you to sync your bookmarks and user credentials to another copy of Firefox.

Would that option to sync bookmarks do anything at this point to retrieve the "disappeared" bookmarks, or are you just pointing to what is available regarding bookmarks, generally speaking?

If it's the latter, then there's no option left but to try to re-collect the most important bookmarks and move on.

Before I do any syncing, though, please clarify: 1. When syncing is done on Android phone or PC , are all the bookmarks in both devices then saved on both devices? 2. If so, are all the bookmarks combined together or are they saved in separate folders? 3. Or, does syncing bookmarks on one device replace the bookmarks on the other device with those bookmarks from the device initiating the syncing?

Thanks in advance for the clarification.
