Firefox should keep the cookies in memory during the session and only write them to disk if Firefox is closed if cookies are kept beyond the session or if there is an allow exception to keep some cookies.

Be aware that protecting Windows with a password usually doesn't mean much because it may be possible to boot the computer via a CD-ROM or USB stick and access local disks directly.
