I have downloaded IE twice and each time it says it has installed it and that I need to restart my PC but there is no sign of IE. Does Firefox prevent the installation?

I believe Windows 7 includes Internet Explorer 9 when you get it -- or at least Internet Explorer 8. You should only need to download if you are updating, and even then, it might be safest to go through Windows update.

As for the IE icon, does it appear on the Start menu? If so, you can right-click it and Pin it to the task bar for easy access.

Did you download and save the IE installer to a folder on your computer (desktop)?

It is possible that security (anti-virus) software is interfering.

Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
