I recently disabled Tab Mix Plus as a potential culprit in FF's ridiculous memory footprint of more than 2.5 gigs. FF was grinding to a halt over and over and crashing a lot too.

Now, even with only a handful of tabs open, and none of them even slightly content-rich, FF is still gobbling up almost 1.5 gigs. It is faster now, and not crashing yet, but this seems really high.

Is this normal for FF?

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
