Internet Explorer stored bookmarks in the folder MyFavorites. In Win/XP I was able to create a toolbar of this folder, select the bookmark, click and launch it.

I use FireFox now, but when I create a bookmark, it is not stored in MyFavorites.

Is there a way to have access to the FireFox bookmarks from my Win/XP screen, to select and launch the browser - if not, then a way to maintain the MyFavorites folder?

Thanks

Making a bookmark.

On the page you want to bookmark, do a right click in an empty area of the page. At the top of the menu, press the Star. Hot key; <Control>(Mac: <Command>) D.

Or, Press the bookmarks Star on the toolbar. This will place a bookmark in the Unsorted Bookmarks Folder. To edit that bookmark, press the Star again.

A window will come up with the name of the page and its web address. You can edit these entries.

Next, select what bookmarks folder you want this bookmark in. If you do not see that folder, go to the far right of the Folder line, and press the down arrow.

Note: Corrected instruction for current version.

As you discovered, Firefox stores its bookmarks separately from your Windows Favorites. In fact, they are stored in a database file that simply can't be used outside of Firefox.

If you want to keep using Windows Favorites, I think you might like this add-on: http://www.iosart.com/firefox/plainoldfavorites/

It creates a new menu on the menu bar called Favorites which lists your Windows Favorites inside Firefox. And when you save a new Favorite to that menu, it will be saved in your Windows Favorites folder. (I tried it a while ago and don't use it lately, so hopefully it still works.)

Note: if the classic menu bar is not currently displayede, you can turn it on from toolbar list using any of these:

  • tap the Alt key to activate the classic menu bar temporarily, then View > Toolbars
  • right-click a blank area of the tab bar, or the "+" button on the tab bar
  • "3-bar" menu button > Customize > Show/Hide Toolbars
