clicking on bookmarks on the main page gives me my bookmarks i have bookmarks under recently and unsorted bookmarks. i can move them from these categories to the main list without a problem. when i click show all bookmarks i get none. it does go to that screen but shows no bookmarks. i would like to use these bookmarks on another computer, as well as edit them in show all.

second problem, my norton tool bar doesn't load and hasn't since ver 36

When you click Show All Bookmarks to launch the Library dialog, normally you see three categories listed on the right side. If you double-click into any of the categories, can you find actual bookmarks listed there or is each category blank?

To transfer bookmarks to Firefox on another computer, there are two different file formats available. I suggest creating both in case one doesn't work out:

Symantec usually is very prompt with updates, but it might be a bit early for Firefox 40 (beta version). There is a release supporting Firefox 39: https://community.norton.com/en/blogs.../firefox-39-support-norton-toolbar. Users report that you sometimes need to run LiveUpdate multiple times to get the latest toolbar injected into Firefox.

If you got on the beta track accidentally and prefer to have timely Norton toolbar support, you can install the release version (Firefox 39) and it should seamlessly work with your existing settings.

It wouldn't hurt to do a backup first. You can find suggestions in this article: Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

And then to do the rollback:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(1) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 39.0 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(2) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(3) Rename the program folder, either:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(4) Run the installer you downloaded in #1. It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Can you get to the Options page?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

Some information about so called smart bookmarks folders:

  • "Most Visited" and "Recently Bookmarked" and "Recent Tags" are examples of so called Smart Bookmarks folders and are not real existing folders.
  • Smart folders show a list created by a query of the places.sqlite database that stores bookmarks and history in Firefox.
  • Smart folder lists show a maximum of 10 entries by default.
  • Bookmarks and history items that show up in a smart folder list are stored elsewhere in another folder and any changes made are applied to the real bookmark or history item.
