Messages are coming in, but neither the 'Inbox' nor any other folder will open even though the contents still there (and almost all the menu items don't work)!

Using latest Thunderbird in Windows 7. Had difficulties with the OS and had to use a system restore. When I opened TB, it displayed the Folders in the left pane but the Generic "Thunderbird Mail - ..." and the 3 headings: Email; Accounts; and Advanced features. None of the folders would open. I used the 'Search messages' feature and was able to see existing and new messages in the 'Inbox'. Also looked to see if the folders were still in my "Profile"...and they were all where they should be. (And almost all the menu items are disabled.) I'm wondering if I need to reinstall Thunderbird...maybe the OS issues this morning - and the restore - have corrupted/damaged key components of the program?? Thanks...

System restore is not always a great thing for applications.

Reinstall is unlikely to help. But if your accounts are all imap and you do not have much other data (eg addressbook) in Thunderbird you could start from scratch.

But before doing that, you should try Thunderbird started in safe mode https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird

Thank you, Wayne. Restarting TB in Safe Mode was the asnwer, in that it allowed the settings to be reset...and that was what was needed. All seems to be working well. Thanks again for your assistance.

So you did not actually change any settings yourself? If you did, what did you change?

reports indicate this is caused by the Calendar addon.

For Windows, 1. install older version from http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/38.2.0/win32/en-US/Thunderbird%20Setup%2038.2.0.exe 2. remove calendar addon, restart thunderbird 3. update thunderbird at help | About 4. reinstall calendar addon

Responding to your question from yesterday...

When I was in to TB SafeMode, I had the two options: disable the addons; and reset the settings. I checked off both of them and then restarted TB. Full functionality was restored, with two exceptions. When I went to send my first message, up popped the spell checker, which didn't work. After a bit I realized that a) there was no dictionary, and b) I had set outgoing messages to be spell-checked before sending. I realized that I'd disabled the dictionary add-on. I enabled that and I was good to go.

The second interesting thing is related to today's note from you. I had the version of TB installed which came with the calendar add-on / thing. I wasn't using any part of it, but the icons were up on the top-right. After setting things aright, however, those icons have disappeared...and I'm not rushing to figure out where they've gone!

Thanks again, Wayne, for your continued support.

Ron

Calendar displays in a sidebar. That sidebar is toggled by F11.

Does the F11 change the icons? If not, then your change would have likely come from having disabled the calendar addon

Anyone also encounter this problem when updating to Thunderbird 38.4.0?
