Ah, so your machine isn't one that can take advantage of the free update to 10.11? Yes, Firefox 45.0.1 will run on that machine. And no, Apple no longer supports that old of an OS and it is no longer considered secure.

Nope, all your data in safari will remain.

Please note that you should update to Firefox 45.0.1 (Update Firefox to the latest release). Also consider updating to Mac OS 10.11 if your Mac supports it. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201475 It will update the security and stability of your mac and allow you to continue to use Firefox on a stable and secure OS (Mac 10.6 is no longer supported and is insecure)

I am currently running Mac OS 10.6.8 and cannot upgrade further. If I upgrade Firefox from 43.0.4 to 45.0.1, will it run on my system?

When you say that 10.6 is no longer supported, I presume you mean by Apple.
