Currently running macOS 10.13.2. Thunderbird 52.5.0 (64 bit).

I have totally uninstalled Thunderbird, reinstalled and set up all mail accounts from scratch. The problem still occurs if Thunderbird is started in safe mode. A few seconds after startup, Thunderbird freezes and nothing can be done except force quit.

Start *Mac'* safe mode with networking enabled

Still in Mac safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird

Does problem go away? Please reply to let us know results.

No, I'm afraid the problem still exists in safe mode - Thunderbird hangs after a few seconds.

Not only did I continue to have the problem reported, I have now sold the MacBook and bought a Linux laptop running Mint 17.10. Once all my mail accounts were set up on the Linux machine, exactly the same issue arose. A few seconds after starting Thunderbird, it freezes and will not do anything further. Other mail clients (I'm forced to use Evolution at present, which isn't bad) may be prettier and have flashy features, but none has the same full extent of functionality. But the lack of effective support is very frustrating.
