I am posting this question since the answer has changed since Firefox 59+, and if you look up answers you'll get something regard about:config settings that no longer exist since in Firefox 59.

The solution is to go to about:preferences#home

Under 'Firefox Home Content' disable everything except web search. The firefox logo will automatically get added. You will have to disable sponsored stories / pocket first to see other options for disabling.
