How does one restore the address bar drop down menu in firefox 77.0.1 ? Mozilla should have made this an option for people to try not forcing it on everyone , the no drop down menu that is.

Hi bx7cr29, do you mean the little triangle-like button that showed your frequently visited URLs?

There isn't any built-in way to restore that button, but you can get that list in two other ways:

(1) Type a space in the bar

This works either in an empty bar or by replacing the current address.

(2) Change the automatic dropping list from the first 8 new tab page Top Sites to your Frequently Visited URLs

You can do this by turning off the "Top Sites" section of the Firefox Home / new tab page. The following article shows where to do this on the Preferences page: Customize your New Tab page to hide or display content.

(The list drops automatically when the cursor enters the address bar. If yours doesn't do that, you could check whether the browser.urlbar.openViewOnFocus preference has been switched to false in about:config. See: Configuration Editor for Firefox.)

If you don't want lists to drop from the address bar automatically and you need a "mouse-only" solution that doesn't involve typing a space, I did create an add-on which shows a very similar frequently visited URLs list. This uses a toolbar button outside the address bar; there wasn't any way to integrate it into the address bar. Note that Firefox 78 will come with a choice of adding top sites to the suggestions that show in the location bar drop-down list.
