VERIZON is my email provider and has been for over 10 years. I prefer to download my email to Thunderbird without keeping it on the server. I received a notice about using 2 factor authentication. What is the best method to setup and use 2 step authentication for Thunderbird that will work with VERIZON?

Are you using Yahoo or AOL servers in TB, i.e. imap.mail.yahoo.com or imap.aol.com? If so, the authentication should be OAuth2, which will work whether or not 2FA is applied to the account. If the authentication is 'normal password' on Verizon servers, then you would have to generate an app password and use that in place of the regular account password in TB.
