If I open Google Maps in Firefox, it shows I'm in Lubbock, Texas. I am not. I'm in Arizona. Google Maps on Chrome gets it right. Bing maps gets it wrong in Firefox but right in Chrome too. Same with Google Earth in the browser. My IP location is correct and shows I'm in AZ. It's seems to be a Firefox issue. I've turned location off and back on. Cleared cookies. I'm at a loss.

Yeah, that's what I turned off and added a default location. As I said, it works for my purposes. For whatever reason, Firefox can't resolve my location correctly and it seems to have something to do with Windows but Google Chrome doesn't have the same issue. If there's something deeper, I'm not interested in ferreting it out.

BTW, my location is shown correctly on my IOS version of Firefox. Syncing had no effect. My location is still shown incorrectly on my desktop version of Firefox.

Those are a mixed bag. Some give my actual location and some don't. I turned off location services in Windows and set up my default location. It does what I want, which is search for stuff where I live instead of in Lubbock, TX.

Are you possibly using a VPN or proxy in Firefox ?

You can check the connection settings.

  • Options/Preferences -> General -> Network: Connection -> Settings

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

See "Firefox connection settings":

That didn't change the location problem. As soon as I tell Windows to use my location, I'm back in Lubbock, TX. And not at a server farm or something. It puts me at a catering company. Never been there or to Lubbock. Whatever. I told windows my location and then turned of location services so it defaults to that location. Does what I need it to do now.

hello dan,

i think all of us are missing things with this digital evolution !!  :-)

i do know that many stores download their cookies onto our systems and the cookies contain our location. So when you visit a national chain store website, the server will know where your computer is located because of the proprietary cookie the store stored on your system.

what i also do on my end, is that i a have a google account that is always signed in. the account also has some basic info on my location. So when i do google searches for products and or maps, its results are dedicated to my locality.

but in regards to you living in Lubbock? This could be beneficial if your a criminal at-large !  :-)

I did a search via Bing and Google on the following. It is a funny search criterian. But it works:

%LOCALE%/firefox/geolocation/

Each company provided slightly different results on this geolocation issue. Please ferret out the best solution for your issue and let us know of your findings.

I had the same problem - only Google Maps showing the wrong location and only in Firefox. Drove me nuts. Eventually I found the that turning Windows location off and on again fixed it (in Windows 8.1).
