Hello,

Today I allowed FF to upgrade to 92.0 (64-bit). I do a lot of work at Ancestry.com and notice that every time I open or refresh a page I get a pop-up message that says "It looks like you have local storage disabled. While you'll still be able to use the site, you may notice that pages load more slowly. Fix the issue."

I followed the Fix the issue link. It took me to a page that said I needed to allow cookies. I do have the cookies enabled.

Any Idea how to fix this?

Hi, are you using Ancestry in a private window? Private windows have certain types of storage disabled, but not local storage if Ancestry is using the strict meaning.

Could you load this test page in the same window where you are using Ancestry and see whether all tests pass or whether there are any failures:

I am not using Ancestry in a private window. Your test worked fine.

I have noticed that the error message seems to 'flash' open and then dissappear. Maybe it is something Ancestry is doing???

Hmm, if the message clears, perhaps there is some kind of timing problem. But if the site seems to be working normally, it may not be worth investigating further.

Local storage uses the same permissions as are set for cookies.

This issue can be caused by corrupted cookies or blocked cookies.

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, DuckDuckGo PE, Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block content.

Firefox shows a purple shield instead of a gray shield at the left end of the location/address bar in case Enhanced Tracking Protection is blocking content. You can click shield icon for more detail and possibly disable the protection. You can check the Web Console for related messages about blocked content.


You can try these steps in case of issues with webpages:

You can reload webpage(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the Cache and remove the Cookies for websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Settings).

"Remove the Cookies" for websites that cause problems:

  • Settings -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Data"

"Clear the Cache":

  • Settings -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data -> Clear Data -> Cached Web Content: Clear

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window

Thanks for your input. I have checked all the settings and things were as you suggested. The error message has not popped up today so far. Maybe it was an Ancestry problem????

I will continue to watch and report back if the message shows up again.

Hi All,

The Error message is back again. I have updated to FF 92.0.1 64-bit.

This is getting very frustrating. So far I have tried everything suggested and nothing stops this error message. Also once the Error message pops up when you click the X to close it the page does not function normally.

What is going on and how can I get rid of this Error message?

Started working on Ancestry and the second tab opened up with the Error Message. I loaded your test URL into the same tab as the one with the error message and here is the response:


Overview: Storage is working. This is the same version (92) as the last time you loaded this page. Specific Subsystem Statuses:

LocalStorage

   Good: Totally Working. (fullyOperational)

QuotaManager

   Good: Totally Working. (fullyOperational)

IndexedDB

   Good: Totally Working. (fullyOperational)

Cache API

   Good: Totally Working. (fullyOperational)

So now you have that additional information to work with.

Do either of these make any difference:

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site that previously worked normally, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache -- note: only clear Cached Web Content, not all of your Cookies and Site Data

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, click the lock icon at the left end of the address bar. After a moment, a "Clear Cookies and Site Data" button should appear at the bottom. Go ahead and click that.

In the dialog that opens, you will see one or more matches to the current address so you can remove the site's cookies individually without affecting other sites.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Yep, I cleared cookies for Ancestry several times however that doesn't seem to eliminate the error message.

I am wondering if there might be a problem at Ancestry and how they interface with Firefox?
