Hi there, I am on a Mac. When I click on a link to any format of file, I need firefox to ask which application I want it to open with. It works with psd, ai, tiff etc formats. But when I click on a link to a jpg or png or gif file, it does not ask whether I want to open it to a selected application or save it. You can try by going here: http://easytask.outsourceexpertsbd.com/images/

Click on the psd file, it will ask, but when you click on png or jpg file it gets open in firefox directly, which I dont want.

I went to Application panel under preference, I dont see jpg, png or gif format listed there. I think that is the problem, but how can I add it if the opening window does not come up and ask what I want to do?

I hope I was able to explain. If not please let me know.

I really need this sorted out ASAP please....

Thanks. Best regards. Sumon

The PSD images are send as image/vnd.adobe.photoshop and Firefox doesn't handle that content type. The GIF and JPG and PNG images are send with their usual content types (image/jpg etc.) and that causes Firefox to render them in the browser. You can't set a download action for such MIME types. You will need to save the images via the right-click context menu and open them in the application or you will have to contact the website and ask them to send the images as application/octet-stream or use a content-disposition header to get an open with dialog.

Hi, Thank you for your replay.

I have a web based application used only within my organisation. The application shows the images in the browser for hard drive, we open them from there to photoshop to edit. So I can configure anything if required. Also since it will be used only with my organisation I can also configure firefox if that helps?

So which option do you prefer me to go for to be able to open jpg, png, gif file into Photoshop with the help of open with dialogue box?

I am also not clear when you said "send the images as application/octet-stream or use a content-disposition header to get an open with dialog." Will you please advise me which option I should go for and then detail instruction on how to achieve that, including any resource that can help me to achieve?

Best regards. Sumon

Note that I don't want the open with dialogue box every time I click on a file. If I chose "Do this automatically for files like this from now on" it should be listed in the Application panel, same like psd, tiff and other formats. Then if I want to change the chosen application I can go back to Application panel and change from there.

Hi, I am still struggling on this and really need a good solution. I need firefox to deal with jpg and png files the same way it does with psd and tiff files. When I click on a jpg or png file link it should ask me which application I want to open it with, then I would like to select Photoshop. Note that I am developing the software so I can put any code needed in the file header. The first reply was quite understandable but I need to be more specific. application/octet-stream or use a content-disposition header maybe useful but I don't know how to implement it.

Once again please not that I do not want firefox to force download the jpg file but force displaying the opening dialog box. Basically I will send the url something like "file:///path.../filename.jpg to the header, and then firefox should ask to select the program I want to use to open the file or save as. Once I select Photoshop the file should be opened in Photoshop from the source location (without downloading).

Any help will be deeply appreciated.

Thanks.
