In firefox 3, somehow in fullscreen mode, the url bar and the addons would not disappear. Now, they do. How do I get them to stay still?

Basically, I'm asking for fullscreen mode without the ugly windows close buttons and menu bar.

I mean without having to do that... so it never goes away.

It's been disabled in FF4 because too many users complained about having it there permanently.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.fullscreen.autohide

Type about:config in the URL bar and hit Enter.
If you see the warning, you can confirm that you want to access that page.

Filter = browser.fullscreen.autohide = double-click that pref to toggle it to False

Then restart Firefox.
