In 3.6 it was easy, Firefox asked me before I closed it, do I want to save the open tabs? In 4.01 Firefox is asking, but after closing the browser, and I open it again, the tabs have been forgotten. I didn't find any settings in options.

Restoring tabs from a lost session is now done after restarting through the History menu ("Alt+S") with Restore previous session.

You can still have the old messages, to make sure you get your tabs restored immediately, but with or without the messages and whichever way you respond to the message you can still get back your previous session through the History menu.

Firefox 4 introduced app-tabs (pinned tabs) which last through to the next session, and normally use less space than normal tabs showing only the icon. App-tabs are fixed to the left side of the tabs bar.

You can make Firefox 4.0.1 look like Firefox 3.6.17, see numbered items 1-10 in the following topic Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 look like 3.6)
