Between sessions, the cookies settings in "privacy" revert to "remember history" and do not remain at "use custom settings."
For a few months, some of the sites I visit have treated my iMac (Lion) as if it's an unknown computer, even though I supply the answers to "secret" questions and check the "remember" box. When I close the preferences pane or quit Firefox, the Privacy pane reverts to Remember History. I've used your help articles on cookies, but the changes you suggest don't take. I did notice this session that minimizing the Privacy pane after selecting Use Custom Settings and letting it stay in the Dock let me log in and out of sites as if the site remembered the computer. I don't know whether it will stay fixed.

Choosing the "Use custom settings for history" setting doesn't make any changes to history and cookie settings.
Firefox shows the "Use custom settings for history" setting as an indication that at least one of the history and cookie settings is not the default to make you aware that changes were made.
If all History settings are default then you see "Firefox will: (Never) Remember History" and the custom settings are hidden.
Thanks very much. I needed the explanation.
Interestingly, though, I still can't get Firefox to remember certain sites between sessions. Most are okay, and Firefox on my Windows machine at work doesn't have the problem. Just the iMac at home with Lion.
Websites remembering you and automatically log you in is stored in a cookie.
- Create an allow cookie exception (Firefox > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep such a cookie, especially for secure websites and if cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
Make sure that you do not run Firefox in Private Browsing mode.

- In Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode all cookies are session cookies that expire if that session is ended, so websites won't remember you.
Do not use Clear Recent History to clear the "Cookies" and the "Site Preferences"
Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.
