The method suggested for importing Bookmarks from IE didn't work for me, it only imported about 1% of my bookmarks.

I still don't know how to import all my Bookmarks (I have thousands of them) into Firefox, following the directions given, only a small fraction of the bookmarks were imported.

Hey quadratic,

I'm sorry to hear that you couldn't transfer all of your bookmarks over, however let's see how we can solve that.

Have you tried looking at Importing Favorites and Other Data from IE?

That lists the procedure needed to import the remaining bookmarks over since you probably used the startup transfer when you first installed Firefox.

Let us know if that works for you!

If there are problems with importing the IE Favorites in Firefox then export the favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.

If you do not have the menu bar in IE then right-click the toolbar at the top to enable the Menu Bar.

  • Export the favorites in IE to an HTML file (bookmarks.html):
    File > Import and Export
  • Import the HTML file in Firefox:
Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import Bookmarks from HTML

See "Import from another browser" and "Import from file":

That's the same thing I did before. I tried it again, and got the same result. Howard

Hi quadratic, I'm not sure which method you tried that failed, or whether you tried both and both failed, or whether you finally found success.

To recap, the two methods are, in the Library dialog (Ctrl+Shift+b), on the Import and Backup menu:

  • "Import Data from Another Browser" - sometimes incomplete
  • "Import Bookmarks from HTML" - after you've exported from IE first, usually gets them all

Hi southall, what is the other browser?

If the other browser is Safari, its export to HTML includes some out-of-place tags that confuse Firefox's importer. A volunteer can explain how to edit the file so it imports, or you could search for past threads specifically on importing bookmarks from a Safari-generated HTML file.

If the other browser is IE, could you use the Library dialog (Ctrl+Shift+b or Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks) to check whether the imported bookmarks ended up in an unexpected location. In the left pane, expand the Bookmarks menu to look for folders, and also check the "Unsorted Bookmarks" section.
