I have scanned for malicious software, reset Firefox, checked for and uninstalled all tool bars and unfamiliar extensions, uninstalled Firefox for all users on this computer, deleted all profile folders for all users on this computer and re-installed Firefox after each of these changes. Firefox keeps settings and works fine until the computer is restarted. Then Firefox reverts to the home pages that were configured several months ago. I have tried this with different versions of Firefox over the past couple of months to see if that makes a difference. It doesn't. This is happening on a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit system as part of a Server 2008 domain (no roaming profiles configured). Where is it finding the old settings and how do I get rid of them?

Do you use Advanced SystemCare or any other security/utility software with a settings protection feature? These may be called Surfing Protection, Browser Protection, Home Page Protection, etc. You may need to turn those off in order to save settings changes.

Windows > Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Go thru the list and make sure you know what each program is for. Use web search on anything you don't know.

Run several of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Thank you, but I have used 4 different malware/anti-virus scanners and uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox I don't know how many times. There are no programs listed in the Programs and Features list that should not be there. There are no toolbars, add-ons or extensions in any of my browsers that should not be there. I even tried uninstalling some add-ons that I wanted to have (Skype, Adobe Flash and Java), just to see if that would help.

Can you start by giving us the troubleshooting information from the Firefox installation that's having problems. This is an essential step in troubleshooting.

  • Click the Firefox button at the top left, then click the Help menu and select Troubleshooting Information from the sub-menu. If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Help menu at the top and select Troubleshooting Information from the menu.

Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.

  • At the top of the page, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.
  • Now, go back to your forum post and click inside the reply box. Press Ctrl+V to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.

Have you tried to edit the home page manually through about:config? You can try to reset the prefs that do that to see if it'll reverse the action

  • Navigate to about:config in your Address Bar
  • Press the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button to proceed
  • Search for browser.startup.homepage
  • Right click the pref and select Modify
  • Edit it to whatever home page you want.
  • Restart Firefox

If that doesn't work try you can check for problems with preferences.

Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

You can check for problems caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file.

Moses - Thank you for the suggestions. editing about:config didn't change anything. When I restarted the browser, it opened with the same home pages I want to eliminate. There is one Firefox profile: It doesn't contain a user.js file It doesn't contain any numbered prefs-##.js files Deleting prefs.js worked when I restarted the browser, but the old home pages came back when I rebooted the computer. Deleting localstore.rdf worked when I restarted the browser, but the old home pages returned when the computer was rebooted.

Each of the times I uninstalled Firefox, I also deleted all folders I could find on the computer named Firefox or Mozilla and all of their contents, so a new profile would be created when Firefox was reinstalled. Is there a registry setting that could be causing this?

jscher2000 - Advanced System Care was the culprit. Thank you, thank you, thank you. And thanks to everyone for your suggestions.

Glad you were able to solve it. (Sometimes I think they should rename the product Advanced Hair Loss)

Yes, by going onto the about:config, I was able to change my home page as well. In the latest release, it seems there is no menu item for changing the home page. It seems rather cryptic to have to go in and change lines in the config file. But I suppose that's what open source is all about - more for computer hacks than for regular folks.

Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the tool bar. Followed by;

Windows; Tools > Options Linux; Edit > Preferences Mac; application name > Preferences

Then General.

There are two settings;

  • When Firefox Starts

When the browser is started, what do you want to display. Many of us choose Show My Home Page.

  • Home Page

When a new page is opened, what do you want displayed.

  1. Use Current Page. Use what ever page(s) are open at that time.
  2. Use Bookmark
  3. Restore To Default. about:home shows a Mozilla page with tools.

You can use any of these that you wish;

about:home (Firefox default home page), about:newtab (shows the sites most visited), about:blank (a blank page),

or you can enter any web page or about: page you want.

Hi queue1114, you should be able to edit your home page setting on the "General" panel of the Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac/Linux) dialog in Firefox 31 just as in earlier versions. You can get to the dialog from the "3-bar" menu button, or using the classic menu bar per Fred's post.

If your Options/Preferences dialog does not have the General panel or if this setting is missing from the panel, it may be corrupted or an extension may be modifying it. Please post back for suggestions if you have that problem.
