This morning (June 11, 2014) I downloaded and installed Adobe Flash Player 14 (because of an upgrade prompt) and now I can't open any new tabs. Links from emails will open new tabs - so will some internet links will open new tabs - but pressing the "+" does nothing. I tried reinstalling Flash Player. I tried downloading and installing a new Firefox.

Mac OS X - 10.6.8

In some cases, exiting Safe Mode and starting Firefox regularly works automatically (like blowing the dust out).

But more often one of your extensions needs to be updated or disabled in order to get the missing functionality back. Figuring out which extension sometimes take a little work.

First, try updating extension. You can do that on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then on the right side, find the "gear" button and use Check for Updates.

You also can use this page to disable extensions that might be the culprit, or to click into their Options dialogs (where available) to see whether there is a setting for this.

Any luck?

If the Flash player plugin currently has the keyboard input focus, then it can intercept Command+t, but that shouldn't affect the new tab button.

In case one of your extensions is involved, could you test the page in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run

After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).

Any difference?

Thanks for the info. So I did restart in Safe Mode and now I can open new tabs. Does that fix everything - or is there some else I need to do?

Short version - it only needed to update "Installl Converter Community Toolbar 3.21.0.1" - No go. Disabled extension one-by-one. Tha apparent culprit was "Installl Converter Community Toolbar 3.21.0.1"

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for naming names. Often a "community toolbar" also switches you to a variety of Conduit-related services. Hopefully those are not an issue for you, but if you have difficulty with your home page, new tab page, search engine, etc., let us know.
