I tried to have thunderbird log in and download e-mail from one of my google accounts. I kept getting password errors and then an e-mail from Google on another account telling me that this account failed. partial quote below. They indicate that Thunderbird no longer meets modern security standards. Will there be an update that will resolve this?

Quote and links from google with details about the new security setup. --------

If this was you You can switch to an app made by Google such as Gmail to access your account (recommended) or change your settings at https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps so that your account is no longer protected by modern security standards.

Chosen solution

There may be an update, it is being hotly debated. as the "modern security standard" Google are trying to force feed everyone is a web standard not a mail standard. To work properly the application must act as a browser. Something of a security issue for a mail client that is not a browser.

They Mention Outlook and Thunderbird like they are standouts. The truth is there is not a mail client on the planet other than Google web apps in a browser or on a mobile device that meet their standard. Want your Yahoo or Hotmail account to collect your mail from Gmail... nah they are less secure as well in that function. Want Google to get mail from the others... wow they use the less secure approach of POP and IMAP with password authentication.

But Google now have your phone number to add to their little trove of personal information to serve adds with.

The bottom line is enable less secure apps. They are standards compliant applications. They are not less secure, they just do not meet Googles arbitrary authentication standard.
