how do I prevent Thunderbird from dumping messages deleted from the junk folder into the trash folder? If I delete messages from the Junk Folder, they go into the Trash folder where I don't want them because they are not Trash, they are Junk. when I am looking for a message I previously deleted, I don't want to have search through all the Junk. Moreover, Tbird automatically dumps Junk mail into the Trash at certain intervals. I wish I could stop this. I have checked my Account Settings for Junk and nothing in the settings allows Junk Mail to be automatically deleted.

re : If I delete messages from the Junk Folder, they go into the Trash folder.

I believe this occurs because you chose to 'delete' them using the 'Delete' button. You have two options:

! : If you right click on 'Junk' folder and choose 'Empty Junk' and then right click on Junk again and choose 'compact', you should not get them going to the Deleted folder; they should all be simply removed.

2 : If you do not want to empty the Junk, but want to delete a specific junk email and not have it go to Deleted folder then do this: Hold down 'Shift' and press Delete (keys or button). This method can be used to delete any email and by-pass the Deleted folder.

Junk Settings: Tools > Account Settings > Junk Settings for the mail account.

  • Select : Move new Junk messages to

If POP

  • Select; Junk folder on pop mail account.

If IMAP

  • Select: 'Other' and the Junk folder on the imap mail account - this might be called Spam depends on server.

If you do not want Junk to be auto deleted - in other words sent to Deleted folder:

  • Do not select / uncheck 'automatically delete Junk mail older than x days.'
  • click on OK.

Tools > Options > Security > Junk tab

  • Select: When I mark messages as Junk:
  • select: Move them to the account's Junk folder.
  • Click on OK
