How do I make it so new tabs open to my homepage?

The latest update has made it so new tabs open to the page with tiles of my frequently visited sites, I'd rather have new tabs open to my homepage. The "New Tabs Controls" menu has options for the top sites tiles and a blank page, but nothing else. I've done the about:config thing but that doesn't seem to be working anymore.

Chosen solution

The browser.newtab.url pref is no longer supported in Firefox 41 and later, so you can no longer use this to set the new tab page.

You can look at this extension if you use the home page as the new tab page.

You can look at this extension to set the new tab page:

You can set the new tab URL setting via the Options/Preferences of the extension on the about:addons page.

Classic Theme Restorer includes this feature as well. In current CTR versions (1.3.9+) you find "New tab page url" in the Tabs (1) section.

You can use these special pages for the new tab page or use the URL of a web page. the default new tab page with the tiles is about:newtab

  • the default home page is about:home
  • for a blank page you can use about:blank
  • for Super Start you can use about:superstart

New Tab Override (browser.newtab.url replacement) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

With Firefox 41 (and higher), it's no longer possible to customize the page shown in a new tab via changing the preference browser.newtab.url in about.config. Because of the fact that hijackers abused the preference in the past, Mozilla decided to remove it (see bug 1118285). Fortunately, by removing it, Mozilla also introduced a new API to bring this functionality back to life as an add-on. This add-on allows the user to choose a certain page in a new tab.
