Opened up my browser yesterday and, instead of my home page appearing, there was something called nginx. What on earth is it, and why did it show up unbidden? How can I get rid of it?

Chosen solution

I would recommend going to options and seeing if something changed your homepage. If so all you have to do is reset it.

You can try restart Firefox in safe mode to see if it is not a malfunctioning add-on

"nginx" is server software used by internet servers similar to Apache and other server software. If you see such a server message then there is usually something wrong with the link (URL) that is used.

If this is happening with a bookmark then try to navigate to that page starting with its home page.
