Thunderbird keeps freezing up, "not responding" only a few minutes into a session.

I've been using it for years before this problem. Windows 7 with all current updates. Tbird 38.xx whatever was the download I updated to today. Now it won't even start. I tried rebuilding the global database. I tried deleting LOTS of old emails (hundreds that had accumulated over the years) and compacting and re-compacting. I have been using Tbird with 6 different accounts (some IMAP, one POP3) for the last few months before this problem came up. Now it is unusable.

What can I do?
