I just upgraded from TB 3.1 from an old imac running 10.5 to TB 45.1.1 on a new mac laptop running 10.10 (after migrating from the old mac to the new laptop).

On the new laptop, I trashed the old TB .app, and installed 45.1.1 from the .dmg . I retained my IMAP settings (with gmail) and all other settings from the old mac, and TB is generally working normally.

Tools->Account Settings->Copies & Folders->Place a copy in: [CHECKED] Place replies in the folder of the message being replied to [CHECKED]

When I send a reply to an email stored in a local folder, there is no problem: my reply appears in that folder as expected. When I send a test email to myself and then reply to it while the original received email sits in my Inbox, my reply gets placed in my Inbox as expected.

HOWEVER: when I receive an email from someone else and then reply to it while the original received email sits in my Inbox, one of two things happen:

  1. TB shows my reply being sent, then it says "reply copied to Inbox", but no reply is there and at the bottom of the window it says "Deleted 1 message from Inbox"; OR
  2. My reply does show in my inbox, but only with the first line or two of my reply.

In both cases, the full proper reply is in the imap'd gmail Sent folder, so I can recover the lost/corrupted reply by logging on to the gmail server.

my Inbox has 0 or a few emails only; all folders have been compacted

I tried an older version of TB: 3.1 on this new laptop, and to my astonishment got the same bad behavior. I had no such problem on my old imac running 10.5.

Hmm could this be some weirdness from Gmail and their penchant for hiding duplicates and their insistence on making a copy of all mail sent in the sent folder. Regardless of your desires.

Have you tried another provider? to see if it is Gmail specific. I suggest GMX as they have a very standard implementation of IMAP. Unlike Gmail and Hotmail.

Ive been using gmail for the past 11 years. The problem only started when I migrated from my 10.5 imac to the new 10.10 laptop. At first, I saw the problem with the old migrated TB (which otherwise worked fine). I figured it was because I needed an up-to-date TB for 10.10, so I trashed the TB .app and installed 45.1.1 from the .dmg . To my surprise, the problem continued.

Since no one else seems to have this problem, and the problem seems like a race condition, and I reinstalled TB, I cant imagine where it's coming from.

I see what's happening wrt 2. (above): a copy of my reply appears in (local) Drafts; after that, any lines I add to the email are missing from the saved copy when I hit Send--only what was in Drafts is saved in my Inbox (and the Drafts copy is deleted). But the entire email--including all lines added later--is actually sent, and appears in gmail/Sent.

and btw, I did Repair Folder on both Inbox and Drafts--didnt help.
