Under Windows 10, I cannot exit Firefox 55 normally using any available exit option. Need to go to Task Manager to kill the process.

Did you check that?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Hi Ilabeck,

What happens when you click on the "X" button ?

It hangs or doesn't respond ?

Use one of these to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

  • "3-bar" menu button -> Exit (Power button)
  • Windows: File -> Exit
  • Mac: Firefox -> Quit Firefox
  • Linux: File -> Quit

Clicking on the "X' button yields no response.

As I mentioned , no exit method works. I had already tried the menu option.

I have some 'legacy' add-ons running...wonder if one of them might be causing the problem? For example Session Manager 0.8.1

Running Firefox without any add-ons loaded results in normal exit functioning. Guess I will have to wait for legacy add-0ns to be updated.

I have this issue, as well. I had it in 54xx. that stopped functioning. So, I downloaded 55.. and created a clean install. I clicked on the 3-bar and the exit button and it doesn't work. I click on the red x in the title bar. It doesn't work The only way it will close if I right click or left click on the icon in Windows 10 taskbar. I disabled the legacy ad-ons and still it won't close. I don't have this issue with any other app on my laptop.

I had a similar problem to dc828shopper in that I could only close Firefox by individually closing each tab, or right-clicking Firefox on the taskbar and closing the window. In my case it was caused by the Tab Mix Plus extension. Fixed it by going to Tools/Tab Mix Plus Options/Session, and checking the "Use Firefox's built-in Session Restore feature" tick box.

Bingo! Tizmasel has solved the problem for me as well. Thanks much!
