When I start to type an address in the URL bar, I get a drop down box directly below the url/address bar. The dropdown, which is as wide as my firefox window, contains a little magnifying glass icon and the text "Search with Yahoo" where Yahoo is my default, and only, search engine. I don't want this drop down box at all but I can't seem to disable it.

Chosen solution

The top bar of the drop-down is informational: it informs you of what Firefox will do if you submit the contents of the address bar right now.

While it is possible to hide the top bar of the autocomplete drop-down using custom style rules, that wouldn't change the overall behavior of the address bar. For example, to select a suggestion on the drop-down, you would still need to arrow down to (or click) the desired suggestion.

If you want to get rid of the entire drop-down including all the suggestions, there is a way to do that. McCoy has posted this in other threads:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste URLB and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.urlbar.maxRichResults preference to display a dialog where you can modify 10 to 0 (zero) and then click OK

Hello mrpassey,

Setting the value of the preference "browser.urlbar.unifiedcomplete" to "false" used to disable that blue bar, but that preference was removed some years ago .....

Also see : https://www.askvg.com/tip-remove-search-with-google-and-visit-website-options-from-firefox-addressbar-results/

If seeing that blue bar bothers you that much, maybe you'd like to add code to the userChrome.css file - see cor-el's post in this thread :

Thanks McCoy will try the CSS resolution. Such a shame basic options aren't available within Settings, let alone having to go where dragons live. Considering moving back to Chrome.

Aww, don't do that - I'm sure that Chrome has its own annoyances ......

Resolved at last, huge thanks guys!

Still seems a shame this feature cannot be disabled simply from within Settings. How is the best way for me to submit a development request? Keen to help make Firefox better and ensure other people don't encounter silly little issues like this.

Just curious :

Did you decide to have nothing appear under the address bar and set the value of the preference browser.urlbar.maxRichResults to 0 (zero) ?
