Please update to Firefox 67, 60 is out of date. I imagine you can change the icons using userChrome.css, but that's an unofficial hack that isn't supported.

I'd still be using 56 something, except I ran into unsigned extension issues with my plugins.

Everything worked fine until that. It was then I was forced to go to the ES version, that's supposedly current, only to have everyone tell me I have to update again. Have to.

Why do i need to hack the system and spend hours getting a usable browser?

There have been legacy system add-on published on the Add-ons website for older Firefox versions. See "For older versions of Firefox":

Those icons are likely SVG images for performance reason and not real images.
