If I am web-browsing, and try to email from an internal link, I get a dialog box that states that there is no associated email program and the operation fails. The only way I can email is to copy the link, go back to my home page email, (Yahoo), and paste it into the address bar. Why is this occurring and how can I get Firefox to recognize the email program?

You can set Firefox up to use Yahoo mail as Firefox's mail client, for details see changing the e-mail program used by Firefox
