Spell check switches itself off randomly despite being set 'on' in Options & dictionary set to 'enabled'

In entering a multi-line text box, spell check is sometimes disabled and I need to right-click and re-enable it. This switching off is random (approx 60% of the time). I am currently running 3.6.13 under Vista home premium but the problem has existed for several releases. I have British English dictionary installed and enabled and spell check is set on in Options. Once spell check is switched on for a text box it works until exit from the box but is often off again when opening the next box.

This issue can be caused by an extension or plugin that isn't working properly.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
  • Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
