I keep getting a message that Java needs to install an update. I click to allow and then I click to install but the install fails and then a few days later I get the notice again. Is my version of firefox preventing Java from updation or am I doing something wrong?

You can try an alternate method:

Go to your Control Panel and look for JAVA in the Program list, then click on the Java icon and a window should pop up. Click on "Update". If you need to update, it'll tell you so.

You can also try to download the full Java version and uninstall the current Java version via Control Panel > Programs and Features and install the new version.
