Every time I try to update to Firefox version 4.0.1, everything seems like it's gone okay. I experience no errors.

I've tried to download Firefox four times now. Each time I successfully clicked "Finish" with the option to launch my browser. And each time, when I try to download an addon, I get the frustrating message that I am still only using version 3.5.5 and I need version 3.6.

I am using an old Dell. Windows XP. Flash up to date.

You may have a corrupted user agent:

  • Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091102 Firefox/3.5.5 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) FBSMTWB

Does this mean that I should uninstall and reinstall my current Mozilla Firefox?

No.

Check the general.useragent prefs on the about:config page.
You can open the about:config page via the location bar, just like you open a website.
Filter: general.useragent

If any general.useragent prefs are bold (user set) then right-click that pref and choose Reset.

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.
