After receiving numerous annoying update popups from firefox, and the embedded link therein failing to connect to the update server, I've downloaded and attempted to install the latest version for offer. Upon attempting install, and telling the install utility to overwrite the previous version in the applications directory (Mac OS 10.7.2), the new version both damaged the existing version of firefox (presumably during the overwrite attempt), and then failed to install itself due to the following claimed error:

"The operation can’t be completed because some items had to be skipped. For each item, choose File > Get Info, make sure “Locked” is deselected, and then check the Sharing & Permissions section. When you are sure the items are unlocked and not designated as Read Only or No Access, try again."

Problem is, no list of the pertinent files is provided so I can go and unlock them. Now what?

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop

  • Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
  • Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.
