What page have you set as the new tab page (i.e what is the value of the browser.newtab.url pref on the about:config page)?

it's set to mozilla firefox home page

preference name: browser.newtab.url status: user set type: string value: about:home

To disable displaying previous searches on the new tab, there is a square window right on the left hand side below the Task bar. Click on it. It will disable your previous searches.

Else you can do it from by removing check on Options/tabs/show tabs previews....

Are you referring to the 3x3 grid icon to disable the about:newtab page?

That wouldn't effect the about:home page.
That page show autocomplete entries in the drop-down list, but AFAIK it shouldn't populate the search field automatically.
