Problems with google stuff on Firefox

more options

Recently, My Firefox has problems with googling stuff. For example, when I try to access simple Google.com on the address bar, it gives unusual error:

Secure Connection Failed

www.google.ca uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate does not come from a trusted source. (Error code: sec_error_inadequate_key_usage)

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could
   not be verified.
Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem. Alternatively, use the command
found in the help menu to report this broken site.

Firefox gives me the same error message when I try to find information by entering the simple entries such "News", "Microsoft" and etc on the address bar. Apparently, I can't use Firefox to google.

Do anyone know what's wrong with my Firefox browser and how can I resolve the issue ?

Do you use a Kaspersky product for your security suite? A user running PURE 3.0 recently posted the same error message: Firefox says Gmail is an untrusted connection (sec_error_inadequate_key_usage). It does not give me an option to load the page anyway.

No. I don't use Kaspersky product. I don't know what's the problem.

A few other thoughts:

(1) If you access Google in IE and click the padlock icon in the address bar to view the certificate, what do you find in the "Issued by" section as the issue? I have attached the info from Firefox for comparison; I don't have a modern version of IE on this PC.

(2) Do recall changing any encryption-related settings, either through the Options dialog or using the about:config preferences editor?

You could check for non-default settings as follows:

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(B) In the search box above the list, type or paste ssl and pause while the list is filtered

If any of the preferences whose names start with network. or security. have been customized, they likely will be bolded and show "user set". Could you post those by right-click copying the preferences and then right-click pasting into a reply?

Hi jscher2000

1) In IE Google Gmail, The certificate is issued by: Google Internet Authority

    G2

2) Do you want me to copy the customized preferences in Firefox into my

   reply to your email ?

Hi jscher200

I didn't change any encryption-related settings, either through the Options dialog or using the about:config preferences editor in Firefox. But, I remember I reset the settings to default in Firefox by creating an Old Firefox Data file when I tried to clean up an unwanted application.

If there are no customized settings (everything is default), then no need to paste them into a reply.

Hmm, is the certificate you checked in IE for the same page you are trying to load in Firefox? I thought you were using search, not Gmail. Or maybe they are on the same server (www.google.ca).

Hi Jscher2000

I first accessed google.com in IE address bar, then I selected the Gmail option on the page to display my emails because on the google.com page there is no padlock icon on the address bar. I thought the certificates on Google.com and Gmail are the same ? What do say about the certificate in Firefox now, see any problem ?

I was confused because in your original post, you have the .ca top level domain (Google Canada) instead of .com.

If you try https://mail.google.com/ in Firefox, do you get the same information in Technical Details that you got originally for www.google.ca, or a different error?

Hi Jscher200

Oops, I made a mistake. I finally typed Google.ca on IE address bar and looked at the padlock icon (did indeed show up), the certificate is issued by Microsoft Family Safety. Do you see any problem with this ? Does this has to do the way Microsoft setup for this account under Family Safety feature ?
